New Guidelines ERC 2005

In 2002, two large randomized studies investigating the use of controlled mild hypothermia in comatose adults after resuscitation from out-of-hospital VF cardiac arrest were published in the New England Journal of Medicine.

These studies credibly showed a positive effect on neurological outcome and survival.

The European Resuscitation Council (ERC) added mild hypothermia treatment to the new ERC guidelines in 2005.

New Guidelines recommend:

Unconscious adult patients with spontaneous circulation after out of hospital VF cardiac arrest should be cooled to 32-340C. Cooling should be started as soon as possible and continued for at least 12-24 hours.... Induced hypothermia might also benefit unconscious adult patients with spontaneous circulation after out-of-hospital cardiac arrest from a non-shockable rhythm, or cardiac arrest in hospital.
